Józef Nowakowski, Polish composer and pianist, friend of Chopin. From 1821 to 1826 he studied at the Warsaw Conservatory with J. Elsner and W. Würfl. His II Symphony was played at the second Chopin's public performance (22 III 1830). In 1833 Nowakowski went for a tournee to Germany, Italy and France. In 1836 he and Chopin visited Robert Schumann in Leipzig. In 1838, 1841, 1846-7 Nowakowski lived in Paris. With Chopin's help, he published Piano etudes, which was dedicated to Chopin. As a resident of Warsaw, Nowakowski worked as a pedagogue. He wrote popular Piano School (1847).
