Information: David Winkler is a familiar name in church instrumental music, having directed groups both large and small since the mid-'70s. A graduate of North Texas State University (B.M. -- Jazz Studies) and the University of Texas at San Antonio (M.M. -- Choral Conducting), he has served as pianist, orchestra director, and minister of music in churches in Texas and Tennessee. Besides arranging numerous pieces both vocal and instrumental for publication, he served on orchestration design committees for five major hymnals, including the 1991 Baptist Hymnal and the Celebration Hymnal (published by Word/Integrity). He has been a guest conductor/clinician for several major conferences including the Ridgecrest and Glorieta conference centers, the Missouri Baptist Instrumental Workshop, Church Music Georgia, and the Oklahoma Baptist "Psalm 150" Festival. As a producer, he has twice been nominated for a Dove award for Best Instrumental Recording for his collaborations with Fletch Wiley. A pianist, he served as the accompanist for the Singing Men of South Texas, and later played for many years with the Nashville Praise Symphony, a select group of church musicians directed by Camp Kirkland. As an educator, he has taught piano and guitar privately, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Williamson Christian College and Trevecca Nazarene University. He is also a long-time member of the Metro Instrumental Directors Conference. David and his wife, Cathi, have been married for 31 years, and have four children and one grandchild. They recently moved from Nashville to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where their oldest son is a medical doctor.
