Information: William G Whittaker 1876 - 1944 Born Newcastle. Studied intially as a scientist, and then as a musician through various scholarships and awards. At the age of 22 he was appointed Instructor of Music at Armstrong College in Newcastle, where he remained for 30 years - composing, lecturing, conducting, editing, etc. His main interests were Bach's choral music and the folktunes and songs of his native North East. In 1929 he was appointed joint Professor of Music at Glasgow University and Principal of the Scottish Academy of Music. His original compositions include a piano quintet, wind quintet, a Violin Sonatina, two suites on Northumbrian Folk Tunes and six major choral works.
