Information: Casswell, Nick (b. July 25, 1974, London). British composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed successfully throughout Europe. Mr. Casswell studied at the Dartington College of Arts from 1993-96 (BA with honors) and the University of York in 1998-99 (MA); since then, he has been working on his PhD in composition at the University of Leeds. In 2000, he was on research leave at Seoul National University in South Korea. Among his honors are the Audrey Pass Charitable Trust Scholarship (for study at the University of Leeds, 1999), a Samsung/Royal British Legion/BKVA scholarship (for study in South Korea, 1999) and First Prize at the Leeds Philosophical Society’s Millennium Composing Competition (for Papillon, 2000). His works Papillon and Chorisis were short-listed by the Society for the Promotion of New Music (2000-01) and he also won the competition at the International Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn (hosted by Louis Andriessen, 2001) and received an AHRB scholarship (for study at the University of Leeds, 2001). Most recently, The Transformation and Other Stories was short-listed by the Society for the Promotion of New Music for 2002-03. In 2001, the Zephyr Quartet performed Papillon and ensemble de ereprijs performed Fragments from The Transformation and Other Stories during the Gaudeamus Music Week; the latter ensemble also performed his distance…presence in Germany and Holland at various schools and at the International Young Composers Meeting in 2002. His future projects include an orchestral work, a solo work for kayagum (for Ji-young Lee) and a work for voices, brass, harp, piano, and percussion for Nicole Paiement and the new music ensemble of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
