His work has been hailed as “adept” and “imaginatively scored” by the Woodstock Times, and has been performed domestically and abroad by a wide variety of ensembles. Current projects include a work commissioned by bassoonist Brett Van Gansbeke for performance at the 2013 International Double Reed Society conference, a work for violoncello and toy piano for pianist Han Chen, and a double concerto for bassoonist Elizabeth Garrett and violinist Cordelia Paw. Mr. Grafe has received several prestigious awards for student composers, including a fellowship to the 2012 Aspen Music Festival and School, a 2011 Jacobs School of Music Dean’s Prize, and a 2007 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award. Mr. Grafe is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in composition at The Juilliard School, where he is the recipient of the Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship, the Juilliard Alumni Scholarship, the Richard Rodgers Scholarship in Composition, and the Alexandre Gretchaninoff Memorial Prize. He received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition with a concentration in bassoon from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 2011, graduating with music departmental honors and a general honors notation.
