Information: Robert de Roos was born on March 10, 1907 in The Hague where he died on March 18, 1976. De Roos studied piano, violin and viola at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and composition with Johan Wagenaar. He went to Paris and took private lessons with Isidor Philipp (piano), Charles Koechlin and Roland Manuel (counterpoint), Pierre Monteux (conducting); later he studied with Herman Scherchen (conducting) and Sem Dresden (orchestration). From 1946 to 1956 he was cultural attaché of the Dutch Embassy at Paris and in 1957 he became the First Secretary for Press and Cultural Affairs at H.M. Embassy at Caracas (Venezuela) and in 1961 also for Bogota, Quito, La Paz and Lima. Later he was the counsellor for Cultural Affairs and head of the Department Information and Cultural Affairs at the Embassy in London and from 1967 to 1973 at Buenos Aires and Asunción (Paraguay). Robert de Roos composed in an idiom that is essentially traditional. In addition to orchestral works, concertos, chamber music, songs and piano works, he wrote incidental music and an opera. His chief works are Variations sérieuses (1947) and Suggestioni (1961) for orchestra, Concertos for violin (1950) and piano (1944), Sextuor (1935), 7 string quartets and the Trio for piano, violin and and violoncello (1968).
