Information: Dr. Jang was born in South Korea, and has deep roots in the eastern culture and music. He composes in the spirit and image of Korea, especially on han (bitterness), a Korean emotion. He considers han as a blessing through which people can know God and come closer to God. He reflects this han as a transfigured image of Christianity. He continually explores ways to express han in various musical contexts and styles. Dr. Jang taught at Manhattan School of Music and Boston University while working on degrees in those institutions, and has been a faculty member at Phillips Exeter Academy. His music is widely performed and commissioned in Europe, Asia and the USA, including Avignon Music Festival, Fontainebleau Music Festival, BU Tanglewood Music Institute, Parkway Concert Orchestra and Korean Broadcasting System. He also received "The Best Contemporary Music Award" from Fontainebleau Music Festival in France, and was invited to Dai-sm Contemporary Music Festival in Korea as the guest composer. As a conductor, Dr. Jang conducted Bacau Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania, and was conductor/music director of Exeter Symphonia, Boston Korean Chorus and churches in Boston and New York. His articles about church music and education in America have been published in newspapers such as The Korean Christian Press and Korean Daily News.
