Joseph Suder was born on December 12th,1892 in Mainz as a son of an architect and builder. He early received piano and violoncello lessons and after the Abitur he studied at the academy of musical art in Munich focusing on composition (Friedrich Klose), piano (Karl Roesger) and violoncello (Heinrich Kiefer). Additionally he studied musicology at the univeritiy of Munich (Adolf Sandberger).
Soon afterwards his first composit6ions started to gain recognition; in varied musical practice as pianist, chamber musician, repetiteur and conductor Suder often successfully appeared in public. From 1923 on Joseph Suder increasingly dedicated himself to teaching.
Due to decades of holding presentations and courses at secondary schools and the pubilc school of Munich he gained a whole lot of loyal friends.
Between 1920 and 1950 most of the works of Joseph Suder originated. So did also the chamber symphony that was often performed in 1925 and even internationally successful. The formal principle of the "synthesis" was here applied for the first time and lateron also in further symphonic works and in the chamber music. The creatons of songs is mostly based on his own texts. The only mass of Joseph Suder "Kleider machen Leute" was successfully debuted in 1964 in Coburg. The great mass "Dona nobis pacem" originated after the second world war and is, due to its emphatic appeal for peace, one of his greatest and most impressing works. The important late compositions enjoy great popularity from both, interprets and audience.
Joseph Suder has been teaching until he reached a great age; 1952 he established an orchestra and choires at the Oskar-von-Miller-Polytechnikum. Therewith he founded a diverse music ministration at the Polytechnic of Munich. His last greater work is the wind quintet of 1976. After that Suder mostly dedicated himself to the revision of his earlier compositions. After almost 70 year of working as composer, conductor, pianist and musical educator in Munich, Joseph Suder died after an extended suffering at the 13th of December 1980.
